Heat Pump Repair, Maintenance and Installation

One outdoor unit, two jobs: in summer a heat pump works exactly like an air conditioner, and in winter it reverses to pull outdoor heat inside. Along the Wasatch Front that makes it a serious option for whole-home comfort — especially paired with a furnace in a dual-fuel setup that lets each heat source run when it's the cheaper one.

Not all heat pumps are equal, and the label efficiency number is not the whole story: what matters in Utah is delivered capacity at low outdoor temperatures, defrost behavior, and how backup heat is controlled. We size and quote with those numbers, not the brochure peak.

Can a heat pump heat my home in winter?
Yes, with an honest asterisk: capacity falls as outdoor temperature falls, and how far it falls is model-specific. Modern cold-climate units hold meaningful capacity well below freezing, and along the Wasatch Front the typical strategy is either a cold-rated unit sized for our design temperature or a dual-fuel pairing where the furnace takes over below a set balance point. We size against the load calculation and the model's published low-temperature data — not the peak rating on the box.
What is auxiliary heat?
Auxiliary (or backup) heat is a second heat source — usually electric strips or your furnace — that supplements the heat pump when it can't keep up alone: during deep cold, or while recovering from a big setback. It costs more to run per unit of heat, which is why the controls matter. We configure when aux is allowed to lock in, and a thermostat stuck in aux all day is one of the first things we check on a 'my bills jumped' call.
What is a dual-fuel system?
A heat pump and a gas furnace sharing the ductwork, with controls deciding which one heats. The heat pump runs in mild cold — where it's efficient — and the furnace takes over below an outdoor temperature you choose (the balance point). You get the heat pump's efficiency across the long shoulder seasons and the furnace's muscle on the coldest nights. Can a heat pump replace both my furnace and AC?
Often, yes — an all-electric heat pump does both jobs in one outdoor unit with an air handler indoors. Whether it's right for your house depends on the heating load, the cold-climate capacity of the equipment under consideration, your electrical service, and how you feel about backup strips running on the coldest nights. Dual-fuel keeps the furnace in the picture instead. We'll quote both configurations with real numbers and tell you where each one wins.
How is the right heat pump selected?
The same way we size everything: a Manual J load calculation for cooling and heating on your actual home, then equipment whose published heating capacity at Utah's design temperature still covers the load — with duct capacity, electrical service, and backup-heat strategy checked before anything is ordered. Efficiency ratings (SEER2/HSPF2) matter, but they're the tiebreaker between properly sized options, never the starting point.
