Dust, dryness, odors, condensation, and stale air each have different causes, and the indoor-air aisle is full of products that answer questions your house isn't asking. The work starts upstream of any purchase: where the particles come from, whether the home is tight or leaky, what the humidity actually does across Utah's seasons, and what your blower and ducts can support. What is the best way to improve indoor air quality?
In order of impact: control the source, then ventilate, then manage humidity, then filter. A device can only treat what reaches it, so a running fireplace, a damp crawlspace, or an unvented bath fan defeats any filter you buy. The practical sequence for most homes: fix the sources you can, make sure the house gets fresh air, hold humidity in a sane winter range, and filter what's left with what your blower can actually pull air through. The assessment tells you which of the four your house is actually missing.
Will a better filter restrict airflow?
It can, and that's the trade most shelf-shoppers never see. Higher-MERV filters capture smaller particles but resist air more — and every filter's resistance climbs as it loads. A blower starved by its filter delivers less air to rooms, runs longer, and can trip limits. The right answer depends on your system: some blowers handle a media filter easily, others genuinely can't. We measure the margin rather than guess it, and recommend the highest filtration your system can carry — which is sometimes a bigger-deep-pleat cabinet rather than a denser one-inch filter.
Can an air purifier remove every pollutant?
No — and any product or company claiming that is telling you something about their honesty. Each technology targets certain things: filtration catches particles, gas-phase concerns need different media, and biological growth on coils is a moisture problem wearing a disguise. An air cleaner also only treats air that passes through it, at whatever rate your system moves air. We match the technology to the pollutant you actually have, state what it won't do, and skip the ones whose marketing outruns their evidence.
Do you test for mold or radon?
No — and we'd rather be straight about it than sell you a screening that pretends otherwise. Mold assessment and radon measurement are licensed-specialist disciplines with their own protocols and labs; our testing page states exactly what we do measure (temperature, humidity, CO, combustion-related checks, airflow observations) and where our scope ends. If our visit finds evidence pointing at moisture or a combustion issue, we document it and point you to the right specialist — that referral is part of the service, not an upsell avoided.
What indoor humidity level should I target?
In Utah's dry winters, most homes feel right somewhere in the low-to-middle percent range — but the honest target moves with the weather. The colder it is outside, the lower your indoor setting needs to be to keep windows and cold surfaces above condensation.
